Abstract

Vulvovaginal candidiasis is an opportunistic fungal infection caused by Candida sp., which causes an inflammatory reaction and consequently different signs and symptoms. Studies show that around 75% of women experience candidiasis at least once during their lives. The objective of the work was to present the main characteristics that involve the pathogenesis of candidiasis and the factors that influence its recurrence. A descriptive and exploratory bibliographic study was carried out through research in the databases: Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), Online Literature Search and Analysis System (MEDLINE) and National Library of Medicine (PUBMED). Vulvovaginal candidiasis represents an infection that affects the female population worldwide, and the quality of life of many women is affected mainly by the ability of microorganisms to cause recurrence of the infection at certain periods. It is essential that adequate assistance is ensured for the effective treatment of the affected woman. Therefore, it is essential to have health policies that promote campaigns against the empirical use of antifungals and encourage adherence to medical monitoring for better therapeutic management in the face of infections.
