Abstract

The syphilis diagnosis during the gestation is considered an event of public health interest due to its maternal and child impact. Mother-fetal transmission occurs through the passage of the spirochete Treponema pallidum through the placental barrier, which is possible at any time during pregnancy. Therefore, the present study aims to describe the gestational syphilis profile patientes clinical and epidemiological of in the state of Santa Catarina during the period from 2011 to 2020. For this, data available at the DATASUS were analyzed, evaluating the variables of race, age group, schooling, and clinical classification of the infection. During the study period, 13,030 pregnant women were diagnosed with syphilis, most of whom were Caucasian (76.63%) and predominantly aged between 20 and 39 years (73.43%). The most frequent education of these pregnant women was Complete High School (22.66%), followed by Incomplete Elementary School (20.97%), with 36.34% having latent syphilis and 31.17% had primary syphilis. Caucasian pregnant women, in the young-adult age group and with a medium/low level of education define the profile of patients who were diagnosed with syphilis during pregnancy in Santa Catarina. Thus, it is evident that sociodemographic factors should always be considered in the development of strategies aimed at prevention, early diagnosis, and eradicating treatment of this infection.
