Abstract

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) mediates the release of acute and chronic inflammatory responses through distinct response mechanisms. In this review, we will explore the main regulatory mechanisms of the central and peripheral nervous systems associated with inflammatory processes and their responses to autoimmune diseases. The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) plays a significant role in regulating the mobilization of lymphocytes in the bloodstream. This control is exerted through the direct interaction of catecholamines with β2AR, the beta-adrenergic receptor, found on the surface of lymphocytes, highlighting the interconnection between the immune system and the ANS. Immune cells play a role in the synthesis and release of substances traditionally designated as neurotransmitters and neuromodulators, including acetylcholine, dopamine, and other catecholamines, performing important functions in local immune regulation and in more complex neuroimmunomodulatory circuits. Recent advances in research on neuroimmune communication underscore the need for additional investigations into these interactions to identify potential therapeutic targets for autoimmune pathologies that still present unsatisfactory clinical outcomes.
