Abstract

The body image of young people is related to the physical, psychological and environmental components of their perception of their body. These aspects can affect the health of this population, favoring the distortion of their own image. This study aimed to describe the perceptions of body image among high school students, discussing some indicators about standardization and reality of these young people regarding their body image. Cross-sectional and descriptive/participatory study, used a qualitative/quantitative approach, through a semi-structured/multiple-choice questionnaire. A total of 90 students were evaluated, 37 female and 53 male. The study identified that boys seek a strong and defined body and are not concerned about being overweight. Girls are more concerned with media “standards”, seeking to lose weight and have a defined body. Comparing boys and girls, is observed a not so different standardization of body image, since the objective was to have a “toned” body. In terms of body image perception, boys are satisfied and girls are dissatisfied, although both groups want to change their bodies. The results indicate body dissatisfaction in both groups, reflected in the search for the idealized “perfect body” or the current standard of beauty in the media. Furthermore, the importance of the theme (body image) in the school context is highlighted to alert students about adoption of healthy habits, self-acceptance and the risks of seeking a “perfect body”.
