Abstract

The study aims to analyze the role of the school manager in basic education and verify the perception of professionals in the area about the role and process of participatory and democratic management at school. As a method, it is a qualitative, bibliographical and field approach in three municipal public basic education schools in Lages/SC and, as subjects, six principals. It was found that school directors received training during management at schools in Lages/SC, but insufficiently. It was understood that there are professionals who support management work, dividing functions and not overloading the director. It was concluded that there is recognition of the need to build a democratic management, but in practice there are difficulties in its execution, mainly due to difficulties in handling and distribution of functions.
