Girls should be Girls: The Impact of Child Marriage on Human Development

Abstract

Child marriage is a violation of Human Rights and an impediment to social and economic development, it is strongly rooted in gender inequality. In Brazil, this practice has a predominantly informal and consensual quality, they often involve adult men married to girls in early puberty. The objective of this study is to synthesize the literature on the impact of child marriage on the most diverse indicators of human development - such as education, labor market, health, fertility, violence and female empowerment. In summary, the literature reveals that child marriage has a negative impact on these indicators, and this corroborates the urge to eliminate this phenomenon, which will ensure women’s right to a full economic and social life.

Author Biographies

Raquel Rangel de Meireles Guimarães, Universidade Federal do Paraná

Raquel é atualmente Pesquisadora Bolsista de Pós-Doutorado no International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA, Austria) e Pesquisadora do Wittgenstein Centre for Demography and Global Human Capital. Ela está licenciada como Professora Adjunta no Departamento de Economia da Universidade Federal do Paraná. Raquel leciona disciplinas na graduação e na pós de demografia econômica, microeconomia do desenvolvimento e métodos para avaliação de políticas públicas. Sua pesquisa atual inclui a população e meio ambiente, demografia da educação e economia do desenvolvimento. Raquel se graduou em Economia pela UFMG em 2007, e tem um mestrado em Demografia também pela UFMG (2010) e um mestrado em Educação Internacional Comparada pela Stanford University (2012), além do doutorado em Demografia pela UFMG em 2014.

Nayara Abreu Julião, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais

Possui graduação em Ciências Econômicas pela Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (2013) e mestrado em Desenvolvimento Econômico pela Universidade Federal do Paraná (2017). Atualmente, é Doutoranda em Economia pelo Centro de Desenvolvimento e Planejamento Regional (CEDEPLAR/UFMG) e membro do Grupo de Estudos em Economia da Saúde e Criminalidade (GEESC). Possui interesses de pesquisa nas áreas de Economia da Saúde, Economia de Gênero, Avaliação de Políticas Públicas, Demografia Econômica, Microeconomia do Desenvolvimento e Microeconometria Aplicada.

Thaila Renata Teixeira Doria, Universidade Federal do Paraná

Mestre em Desenvolvimento Econômico na modalidade Profissional com ênfase no papel da inovação para o Desenvolvimento Econômico. Possui graduação em Ciências Econômicas pela Universidade Federal do Paraná (2016). Na graduação, teve experiência na área de Economia, com ênfase em Crescimento e Desenvolvimento Econômico e Planejamento Regional e Urbano através da monografia de conclusão de curso e matérias optativas, além dessas áreas, tem interesse em Estatística Econômica e Econometria, Economia da Tecnologia e sua contribuição para o desenvolvimento econômico e social. Na área profissional, trabalhou em uma grande instituição financeira nacional, além de uma grande empresa de varejo. Trabalhou com inovação durante um ano, em uma Startup de tecnologia e durante dois anos e meio em uma das maiores empresas do mundo no seguimento de auditoria, atualmente trabalha na maior companhia florestal do hemisfério sul no setor de gestão.
