The article proposes a reflection on cultural tourism in Brazil based on documents designed by the federal government, highlighting the need to rethink the devices for valuing cultural heritage. It also addresses the case of tourism in Pelotas as an expression of the distortions of a historical narrative built on the exaltation of the glories of a slave-owning elite and the process of silencing subalterns in the formation of regional culture.
